Ranked species occupancy curves reveal common patterns among diverse metacommunities
نویسنده
چکیده
Aim Community ecologists often compare assemblages. Alternatively, one may compare species distributions among assemblages for macroecological comparisons of species niche traits and dispersal abilities, which are consistent with metacommunity theory and a regional community concept. The aim of this metaanalysis is to use regressions of ranked species occupancy curves (RSOCs) among diverse metacommunities and to consider the common patterns observed.

A community of metacommunities: exploring patterns in species distributions across large geographical areas.
Ecological communities show extremely complex patterns of variation in space, and quantifying the relative importance of spatial and environmental factors underpinning patterns of species distributions is one of the main goals of community ecology. Although we have accumulated good knowledge about the processes driving species distributions within metacommunities, we have few insights about whe...
متن کاملRarity, commonness, and the contribution of individual species to species richness patterns.
Common species have a greater effect on observed geographical patterns of species richness than do rare ones. Here we present a theory of the relationship between individual species occurrence patterns and patterns in species richness, which allows purely geometrical and statistical causes to be distinguished from biological ones. Relationships between species occupancy and the correlation of s...
متن کاملCoexistence in Metacommunities: A discrete time, finite patch approach
Metapopulation theory has emerged as a popular paradigm for studying the abundance and distribution of species in a fragmented landscape. A recent extension to metapopulation theory has been the development of metacommunity theory, which broadens the framework to incorporate the interacting dynamics of multiple species. Much of the work using a metacommunity framework has focused on determining...
متن کاملEvaluating the long-term metacommunity dynamics of tree hole mosquitoes.
Four different conceptual models of metacommunities have been proposed, termed "patch dynamics," "species sorting", "mass effect", and "neutral". These models simplify thinking about metacommunities and improve our understanding of the role of spatial dynamics both in structuring communities and in determining local and regional diversity. We tested whether mosquito communities inhabiting water...
متن کاملThe spatial distribution of African savannah herbivores: species associations and habitat occupancy in a landscape context.
Herbivores play an important role in determining the structure and function of tropical savannahs. Here, we (i) outline a framework for how interactions among large mammalian herbivores, carnivores and environmental variation influence herbivore habitat occupancy in tropical savannahs. We then (ii) use a Bayesian hierarchical model to analyse camera trap data to quantify spatial patterns of hab...
